Media Release

Official opening of the Domestic Terminal at Male’ International Airport

The Domestic Terminal at Male’ International Airport was officially opened by H. E. President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom at 2215 hrs on 21st December 2006.

Work on building the Domestic Terminal started on 24th June 2004 and was completed on 28th November 2005. The work was carried out by Mohamed Abdul Muhsin Al-Kharafi and Sons of Kuwait.

The purpose of building a Domestic Terminal were to eliminate the difficulties faced due to lack of space when having to handle both international and domestic passengers together in the same terminal, as well as to further strengthen aviation security and safety. The Domestic Terminal will minimize the possibility of inter-mingling of international and domestic passengers, and it would provide the international terminal with much needed breathing space.

Domestic Terminal is provided with 08 passenger check in counters. Wheel chairs and porter service are available at the Domestic Terminal as well. The Domestic Terminal is able to handle 140 passengers at any given time.

A jetty has been specially built at Hulhule for passengers departing from the Domestic Terminal. Arrangements have also been made for ferries from Male’ to Hulhule to disembark domestic passengers at the jetty opposite the Domestic Terminal after stopping over at the jetties for international passengers at the Departure Terminal.
