Under the umbrella of Regional Airports Upgrading Project, Hanimaadhoo Airport has been upgraded and opened for operations. Works carried out under the project included re-surfacing of the runway, installation of runway lights and apron floodlights and the installation of a standby generator for runway lighting.

Re-surfacing works started on 12 April 2002 and was completed on 15 May 2002. Works to install runway lights started on 28 June 2002 and was completed on 1 October 2002. The total project cost for Regional Airports Upgrading Project, which is undertaken by Maldives Transport and Contracting Company amounts to MRF 53,484,041.14 (Maldivian Rufiya Fifty three million four hundred and eighty four thousand forty one and fourteen laarees).
